    Unfortunately, conservative public opinion, still led by the zealot Wertham(*), soon had Gaines defending the indefensible, and not doing it very well. Ultimately called to testify before the 1954 Senate Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency, Gaines was backed into a rather tenuous position:<\/p>\n

        When I was five, late in 1959 or early in 1960, I desperately wanted to learn to read so I could read those comic books. I’d learned the alphabet in kindergarten, and one day the teacher was teaching us a song that she’d written on the blackboard, something about ”K-k-katy, beautiful Katy,” and the concept of each letter representing a sound abruptly dawned on me.<\/p>\n

        I suddenly realized that maybe I could read, since I knew all the letters. (\u2026)
        \nThat comic book, by the way, stuck in my memory, and twenty years later I tracked it down and bought a copy. It’s         Adventures into the Unknown<\/b> #105<\/a>, published by the American Comics Group in 1956.<\/i><\/ol>\n

          At long last, I was able to finally come across a copy of Dr. Frederick Wertham’s<\/b> \u201eSeduction of the Innocent”.
          \nI’d heard about the book for years, as have most comic-book collectors. Wertham’s name is well-known to most fans with a sense of history; he was one of the most vocal anti-comics forces in the 1950s.
          \nIt was           Wertham who helped put E.C. out of the horror comics business<\/a> and who ended the production of „True Crime” style comics\u2026 (\u2026)<\/i><\/ol>\n
